Wiltshire Horn
The Wiltshire Horn is one of the short-woollen British sheep breeds bred for meat production. There is however one feature which sets the breed apart from all other sheep breeds in Australia - the Wiltshire Horn sheds its short fleece each year. There is a natural shedding of the wool in Spring leaving the hairy undercoat as the Summer coat (largely preventing sunburn), and a return of wool each Autumn.
The Wiltshire Horn combines the features demanded by the Australian Prime Lamb industry with the hardiness required to prosper in our diverse rural environment: A breed of lean, muscled, large framed sheep that requires no shearing, no crutching and has no major fly problems enables today's farmer to spend more time on the diverse needs of his farm or off-farm activities.
Wiltshire Horns are probably the only sheep that can be managed organically, either as a pure sheep enterprise or as part of another organic enterprise, because of the lack of need for chemicals in management.
